El Antiguo or Ancient is an appropriate name for this Cistercian convent which is the oldest in Toledo. It was founded by Alfonso VI in 1085 when he conquered the city. It was closed to the public until 1982 when part of it was opened to visitors and the museum was set up.
Entry to the museum is through the church, a building that dates from the early Renaissance and contains paintings by El Greco. El Greco's coffin can be glimpsed through the glass panel that covers the entrance to the crypt. It is also possible to buy marzipan and sweets made by the nuns.
